The use of divination in the prophetic

The Bridegroom is wooing and calling. Listen closely and you can hear the voice of our Lord calling His bride to come away with Him. We are in the season of freshness and newness. We are in the season of new life and love. Jesus our Christ is calling us to come away with Him and to find sweet communion with Him; to taste the honey from the rock of His life and His heart towards us in love.

Before we attempt to delve into the architecture of these false prophetic frequencies, it is important that we first define what a frequency is and our use of this term in this particular context. In technical terms, the word frequency usually denotes the specific number of cycles, or complete vibration experienced at each point per unit. It is a scientific term most often used in the measurement of sound waves in order to determine its tone and its pitch. Researchers tell us that humans cannot hear sounds of every frequency, but have in fact become relegated to lower frequencies of hearing, usually between 20 to 20,000 hertz (The word hertz is the scientific or technical term used for measuring frequencies). As such, human beings are incapable of perceiving or detecting frequencies that fall outside of this very limited range. Therefore, unless we employ the use of certain equipment or apparatus, most of us are totally blind, deaf and ignorant to the many different frequencies that are floating through time and space at any given moment, such as television, radio, and various other humanly undetectable frequencies used by various animals and species to communicate. Everything created by God – even God Himself – operates and communicates on its own unique and specific frequency, and it is this mode of communication that we are seeking to address when we employ the use of this term.

The first man, Adam, was able to operate and communicate on the highest possible frequency – the frequency of God! He required no prophet or spiritual apparatus by which to communicate with the Most High, but was able to dialogue and communicate with God effortlessly day by day. But the minute he partook of the forbidden fruit and chose to access wisdom and knowledge from a forbidden frequency or source rather than through God Himself, he brought damnation upon himself as well as every generation contained within his loins, causing man to plummet to a place of lower and lower frequencies, where we have become afflicted to a certain degree with blindness and deafness that has made it almost impossible for us to communicate effectively with God.

Unfortunately, one of the consequences of the fall has been the human tendency to want to rely on every other frequency but God, in order to attain wisdom, knowledge and understanding regarding things unknown. And there have been many fallen angels who have been more than eager to satisfy man’s unquenchable thirst for knowledge and understanding by introducing them to forbidden practices and frequencies strongly denounced and declared anathema by God. These forbidden practices were embraced by the heathen nations whom God required Israel to destroy and permanently expel from the land.

When you come into the land which the Lord your God is giving you, you shall not learn to follow the abominations of those nations. There shall not be found among you anyone who makes his son or his daughter pass through the fire, or one who practices witchcraft, or a soothsayer, or one who interprets omens (times), or a sorcerer, or one who conjures spells, or a medium, or a spiritist, or one who calls up the dead. For all who do these things are an abomination to the Lord, and because of these abominations the Lord your God drives them out from before you. You shall be blameless before the Lord your God. For these nations which you will dispossess listened to soothsayers and diviners; but as for you, the Lord your God has not appointed such for you (Deut 18:9-14 Parenthesis mine).

God had chosen the nation of Israel as His own, and His desire was for them to become a unique people among all the other nations of the earth through their ability to relate and communicate with God by a much higher frequency than the Gentile nations. He then proceeded to give them an extensive list of false frequencies that were very common among the pagan nations of the earth, yet were expressly forbidden by God as being utterly detestable before His eyes, and one of the primary reasons for their impending judgment. In fact, it was because of these same worthless practices that they were being disinherited and driven out from the land.

Most of the forbidden practices listed above fall under the category of divination. Divination is not just some mystical occultic art practiced by a few demonized people in dark places. Divination is actually the art of tapping into forbidden or demonic frequencies, including things celestial or earthly, for the purpose of extracting information, revelation or knowledge regarding things present, past or future. The information extracted through these means can be very accurate, yet the particular frequency is corrupt and perpetuates the same fundamental flaw that resulted in the fall of mankind. When we look to nature or God’s creation for answers, we violate the single prohibition given to Adam by God – “Do not eat of the fruit that is desired to make one wise. I did not create you for that purpose. I AM your source, and my established parameters forbid you from entering into such an inferior frequency.”

The need for discernment

When Paul and Silas were ministering in Philippi, Macedonia, there was a girl there who followed them around making “prophetic” proclamations, but Paul had the discernment to look past the accuracy of her words to recognize the frequency by which she was operating:

Now it happened, as we went to prayer, that a certain slave girl possessed with a spirit of divination met us, who brought her masters much profit by fortune-telling. This girl followed Paul and us, and cried out, saying, “These men are the servants of the Most High God, who proclaim to us the way of salvation.” And this she did for many days. But Paul, greatly annoyed, turned and said to the spirit, “I command you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her.” And he came out that very hour (Acts 16:16-18).

Notice that in the passage above the girl was operating by a spirit of divination, yet she was giving accurate information. The issue was not the accuracy of her words, but the frequency by which she was operating. She was obviously very effective in her practice because she brought her masters “much profit” by the accurate details of her prophesying, yet the means by which she accessed this information was false. In this particular case she was tapping into a demonic frequency, but there are other false frequencies that are not quite so spiritually apparent (as demonic influence) but can operate through more subtle means.

For example, someone practicing astrology and trained in the use of deciphering information through the alignment or formation of the stars, the changes of the moon, or the interpretation of certain solar or lunar phenomenon may be able to provide quite accurate information through tapping into these frequencies, yet do so without any direct demonic influence. The Magi, who were a group of magicians and sorcerers, used astrology to determine and locate the birthplace of Jesus, yet they brought presents and worshiped Him, and also evaded Herod so that he would not be able to locate and kill the child (Matt 2:1-12). I doubt that such behavior was influenced by demonic activity, yet the frequency by which they operated was still false according to the standards of God’s Word (Is 47:13-14).

The false can often appear very spiritual and genuine, as in the case of the Magi from the East. They were very sincere and genuine in their desire to worship the long awaited Messiah, traveling a long and uncomfortable distance to bestow riches and honor on the King. They had no intent on surrendering Him to Herod, but were committed to His protection, yet the revelation that they extracted to bring them to this point was received through a forbidden practice. Had scripture not taken the time to explain this fact, we would have been left to assume that this was a genuine prophetic company that found Jesus.

Similarly, there are many prophets today who are genuinely sincere in their desire to worship God and communicate His will in the earth, yet the frequency they have chosen to rely or depend on is rooted in forbidden and occult practices through a subtle syncretism that has corrupted the present prophetic order. It is not that their motives are necessarily wrong, but that we have become blinded through a false religious system that only appears genuine on the outside.

It is interesting to note that in the case of the girl operating by a spirit of divination, no one but Paul was spiritually agitated by this even though this girl had been following them around “prophesying” for a number of days. This prophetic company consisted of Paul, Silas – a recognized prophet – and probably Luke, yet she was allowed to continue in this false frequency until Paul had had enough of it. Was this due to a lack of discernment by the others or an understanding of the consequences that would follow? I don’t know. The point I’m trying to make here is that false frequencies can appear very genuine and real, but should not be allowed to operate freely in our midst. What the previous prophetic order has been willing to tolerate, the new apostolic order that is emerging in the earth is going to boldly confront, regardless of the religious backlash or consequences. And make no mistake about it, the minute you begin to expose or confront the spirit of divination in your midst, all hell breaks out against you. This is proven by the intense persecution that Paul and Silas faced after having exposed and expelled the spirit of divination that had been deceiving the city (Acts 16:19-24).
